Brenda Martin, Multicultural Officer for the City of Huntsville, will speak at September’s One Huntsville meeting (September 21). Brenda will give us an overview of what is happening interracially, multiculturally, and on the International scene in our city – and there is quite a lot! She will also give us current information about the Neighborhood Association Program. We will also have presenters from Racial Harmony giving us a one year update on activities since the Better Together Conference. We hope you will make plans to join us.

to Celebrate World Youth Day 2010

World Youth Day is an annual recognition of the Church’s love for young people, and an opportunity to celebrate community’s “PRESENT” as well. Come join us on Sunday August 15th from 4:00‐7:30pm for this celebration of the real presence of God in our midst, as the young people of St. John’s Catholic Church welcome the youth of the Interfaith Mission Service’s Twelve by Twelve Hometown Pilgrimage.

The Day’s Agenda

4:00pm - Arrive at the St. John’s Youth Room, welcomed by St. John’s Junior High and High School Ministries; Activities: Inflatables and Snacks on the Parish Field!
4:45pm - Gathering Activity hosted by the St. John’s High School Youth Leadership (St. John’s School Cafeteria)

A World Youth Day Presentation and Introduction to Celebrating the Catholic Mass
“Good Teacher, What Must I Do to Inherit Everlasting Life?”
(Greg Thompson, St. John’s Director of Liturgy & Music)

5:15pm – Assemble for Worship, Celebrating the Catholic Mass in the Church (Mass begins at 5:30 pm)
6:45pm – Return to the St. John’s Youth Room for more activities, food and mingling
7:20pm – Closing Prayer and Thank You (St. John’s Youth Room)
7:30pm - The Twelve by Twelve Pilgrimage Departs

Directions to St. John’s Catholic Church (1055 Hughes Rd., Madison, Alabama 35758): From Huntsville, take I‐565 West, and exit on to Madison Blvd (Exit #13). Go right on Hughes Rd., and follow approximately 4 miles. Cross over Old Madison Pike and Gillespie Rd., and look for the Church on the right after passing the Cliff’s Cove Community. You’ll see the church on the hill, and should take the second driveway. Proceed to the first parking lot in front of the property, next to the field in front of the Church. You’ll see us set up there, and ready to welcome you! If you are coming from Highway 72 (University Dr.), come into Madison and take a left on to Hughes Rd. Follow for two miles or so, and the Church entrance will be on your left, just after the Mandolin Community (across from Trinity Baptist Church).

Leadership Council Passes 2011 Annual Plan

The Leadership Council and Board of Directors of IMS has unanimously passed the 2011 Annual Plan, which now is entering its underwriting phase where it will be sent to the congregations to solicit funding.

The Building of a United Community of Character”

Presented by: Michele (McDaniel) Mason, President and C.E.O, Better Business Bureau of North Alabama

Many communities across our nation are adopting a common mission: to strengthen the citizens, their families, and the community by promoting excellence in character, and thereby to become known as a “Community of Character.” They are envisioning building better communities that pursue reduced crime rates, increased productivity, decreased absenteeism, enhanced economic development, positive self-image, and a positive county and community image.

This Tuesday night you will hear of an exciting initiative to make Madison County an official ”Community of Character…” perhaps the first in the State! Representatives from the Community Mediation Foundation Board (CMF) and the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama’s Board (BBB) have launched the movement with a pledge of support. Their next step is to expand the circle of people and organizations that we involve in this movement – and what better place to do this than at One Huntsville! Come and learn – and become an engaged builder of a better community!

Leadership Council Hears Report on Human Trafficking in North Alabama

On Thursday, June 24 the IMS Cooperative Leadership Council heard a report from Patricia McCay about the growing problem of human trafficking. McCay reported that human trafficking is on the rise nationally and in North Alabama. She reported that often young girls are lured into modeling careers or passage into the US from another nation, put into debt and then forced to work off a so-called debt that they can never pay off. She was pleased to report that Alabama has recently passed a good law that will make it easier for law enforcement to investigate and prosecute potential cases of human trafficking. The law will go into effect on July 1, 2010. Member Congregations and other interested parties are encouraged to contact Patricia McCay if you would like to learn more about this growing problem.
