    Guidelines for Invocations

    Objectives for invocations:
    * To open regular meetings with a brief invocation that would set the governing body’s intention to work together for the common good.
    * To invite local leaders to offer invocations that reflect the diversity of beliefs of Huntsville’s citizens.
    * To honor Huntsville’s commitment to being an Inclusive City and to meet Constitutional standards regarding freedom of religion.

    Everyone offering the invocation is asked to:
    * Be brief — ideally 60 seconds OR LESS.
    * Have an existing standing in a community of faith (minister, teacher, lay leader) or of thought (such as a leader in non-religious philosophical organizations), so to be seen to be respected by and to speak for others.
    * Be willing to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the meeting begins.
    * Aim to solemnize and celebrate the work of the elected officials and of citizens in working together.
    * Be respectful of the diversity of beliefs represented by both those present and those who live in our area without sacrificing your own spiritual convictions
    * Not use the invocation to proselytize.
    * Remember that personal political statements are best reserved for the open microphone time of the meeting, not the invocation.

    ====================
    For this new day, the gift of this City, and for these moments given to us, your trusted stewards, we thank you, Eternal Creator. To You who governs, we pledge ourselves this morning to good governance. We recall the ancient text that guides us this very morning – do justice, love mercy, walk humbly.

    We accept the responsibility we have before us to use these minutes well. Grant us, God, to listen with care, speak with boldness and deliberation, and to find genuine common ground. Our prayer and hope is that we will further in this time together what is noble, best, and excellent for all citizens. We offer this prayer and hope in the confidence of your everlasting and ever present love. Amen.

    ====================
    O Great One Who Creates, Transforms, and Unites, the citizens of this great community to recognize, name and celebrate You in many different ways.

    We share, however, a sense of awe in the wonders of creation: A brilliant sunrise, a mighty wind, a gentle rain, a soothing song of a bird, and the growing and declining of the moon.

    We share a common desire for the healing of the human spirit: a passion for justice and a stronger sense of community, and to live free from crime and senseless violence;
    All of us in this great City have a longing for connections between people from different backgrounds, a growing appreciation of the arts and sports that give opportunities for us to be together, an excitement of a downtown that feels like our common home.

    We are one in our support of leaders who with integrity and courage lead us into the future, taking the best of our past and building on it, creating a vision of our future that pulls us forward.

    Fill this room with your wisdom and fill each person here with a sense awe and respect. Great God, be with us now in the fullness of life, filling us with purpose and hope. This is our prayer, given in your holy name. Amen.

    ====================
    We the residents of this community call you by many names …Eternal God, Creator And Sustainer, Master, Potter, Wellspring Of Hope …

    Out of this diversity comes our joint affirmation that there is one steadfast love present with us this day. We the people who call this our community give thanks to You, God of our understanding.

    You, who from ancient times gave your people covenants and ordinances to uphold and further a more prosperous society … we gather as stewards of the public good, being handed the gift of governance. Ours is a sacred trust shared with people everywhere who serve in so many ways

    Sovereign One, we who gather today join with the citizens on whose behalf these leaders hold offices of trust. We pray for rivers of justice and streams of well-being to characterize their work. move them to lead justly and govern well.

    May they make choices that transcends fear and despair. Grant them vision and courage to come together for the sake of a new future, to work for justice to build bridges and strive for one county and one vision.

    May their and our rally cry be the vision of unified force for a city that cares and shares and empowers its people on every level.
    We offer this prayer in the grounding of your purpose, in the confidence of your great love, and held together by the hope that never dies. Amen.

    ====================

    Let us pause for a moment of reflection and inspiration.

    For creation and for our being we give thanks…

    For all of us who came together today to share in this time of fellowship and peace we give thanks…

    Today, may we be open to one others’ ideas and beliefs, and respectful of our differences, not threatened by them.

    May we grow in our understanding of each other…

    May we see what is truly important and what unites us…

    We ask a blessing on this time together (and on this meal which nourishes our bodies) so we may find the wisdom and strength to serve one another and the world.

    Amen
